"The concept of the wrap dress has existed since the beginning of time.... The difference with [my] wrap dress is that it was made from jersey so it was very close to the body, and it was mostly in animal prints so it made the woman feel very feline,"
- Diane von Furstenberg
Fashion icon, designer, former Princess and President of the CFDA. Diane von Furstenberg is a fashion legend - and so is her wrap dress. Now immortalized with the "Diane von Furstenberg: Journey of a Dress" exhibition at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the iconic wrap dress is celebrating its 40th Anniversary. Last week I was invited to attend the Costume Council at LACMA's special conversation with von Furstenberg and W Magazine Editor Stefano Tonchi. It was a rare and insightful opportunity to hear from the designer and learn more about the wrap dress. I found von Furstenberg to be an incredibly inspiring, strong woman - and a voice that women need to hear. She has lived an incredible life - and remains an unparalled tour de force in fashion. Afterall, who can say they have married a Prince, partied at Studio 54, posed for Andy Warhol and created a dress that epitomizes modern femininity? And all with incredible panache - and confidence. Throughout the conversation, von Furstenberg delivered plenty of chic, inspiring and quite memorable quotes. Scroll down for my favorite one liners (which I wrote down as fast as I possibly could) and plenty of pics from the exhibition. So VeryVeryChic!

"At DVF we are selling confidence.... I never wanted to make a fashion statement, but I wanted to be the friend in a woman's closet."
"To be uncomfortable is not attractive and not practical. You just have to be confident. Life is very short. Insecurity is a waste of time."
"I'm inspired by women."
"Two things my mother taught me: 1) Fear is not an option. If I was afraid of the dark, she would put me in a dark closet. It's not pc, but it works. 2) She wanted me to be independent. My mother gave me strength.
"My father gave me love - so much so that I pushed him away...But he determined the relationship I have with men. I'm not very nice to them."
"People always ask me what are the biggest challenges. You have obstacles everyday. I have such a habit of turning obstacles into postives that I forget it was an obstacle to begin with."
"I think that women are incredibly inspiring....Nature and women are the most inspiring. Art and architecture too."
"That's the great thing about ageing - you can give advice because you know everything."
"Beauty is about imperfection."
"Of course you have to have passion, you need passion to live."
"When I was younger I was [awkward]. Because of the mirror, I decided I needed to become my own best friend. And that is the best thing I have done because I have been carrying myself for a long time now."
"The dress is the [essence] of what my brand is - effortless, sexy and on the go. If it's not effortless and sexy and it won't fit in your bag, then it's not DVF."
"I think we are all real and we are all strong. It's just that we have to have the courage to let it out."
"You have to make sure that before you have a partner, you have to be a partner to yourself."
"In my life I feel like the same person except when I look in the mirror."
"A good party is where you meet someone you didn't expect to meet."
"The secret is to mix. I am Jewish and I married a German Prince."
