At the recent Olympia Le-Tan event in Paris I had the opportunity to chat with Laura Mulleavy. It was a rare chance to talk to the designer and learn about her favorite places in Paris. While Mulleavy was in the city of lights for sales appointments, she of course had some chic plans on the agenda. Here are a few of the details that I found out as well as her thoughts behind the Rodarte Spring 2011 collection she designs with her sister Kate. And.....with the '70s all the rage for Spring, it's the perfect opportunity to post images from the recent runway presentation in New York.
(More images after the break!)
What brings you to Paris?
I’m here to do sales.
How do you know Olympia Le-Tan?
She’s a friend of a friend. I’ve met Olympia before and this was the first time I’ve seen her books and I think they’re so beautiful. I’m like, I want five of those purses. The colors are amazing!
I loved your collection this season. Why did you decide on a ‘70s theme?
It came from two places. [Kate and I] are really influenced by Northern California and we grew up in a place called Aptos which is just outside of Santa Cruz. We kept going on these trips back with our friends to show them where we grew up. I think it just stuck in our heads a little bit. And when we thought more and more about the area and the things that we loved about it like the Redwood forests and how the arts and crafts movement really got started up again - a revisionist version of it in the ‘70s - it just seemed to all go together. We built off all the things that we saw all the time when we were young.
Do you have any special plans while you’re in Paris?
Well, I’ll be doing sales, but I’ll see my friends Carol and Umberto [from Opening Ceremony]. And other people like one of our stores had a dinner tonight. Her name is Deena [Abdulaziz] and she has a store [D’NA] in Saudi Arabia, which is amazing. Things like that.
Paris is such a cultural city. Are you planning to visit any museums?
The Museum of Paleontology and Comparative Anatomy [Galerie de paleontology et d’ anatomie comparée]. It’s my favorite museum in Paris. If you go see that with the Rodin Museum [Musée Rodin], it’s an amazing day.
Do you like to shop for vintage?
I like to buy touristy things. I like to buy Eiffel Tower earrings and magnets. So, no vintage.
What are a few of your favorite places in Paris?
I go to a Moroccan restaurant called Le Martel, that’s my favorite restaurant. And I always go to Colette of course.
Are you going to any designer shows?
That’s complicated too because it’s all during the day. We’re doing appointments so it’s kind of hard to leave.
Yes, all business it seems...Here is a look at the Spring 2011 Rodarte collection.
