VVC on FGI's "Fashion + Tech" Trend Panel

 

"How creative you can be, is really how far you can take it."

That's how I see fashion in the digital world. I was honored to be on FGI Los Angeles' "Fashion + Tech" trend panel last week. It was great catching up with many friends on the panel and meet some new faces. Kelsi Smith, founder of the Los Angeles Fashion Council, moderated the panel that included Nicolas Ullah, U.S. director of marketing for Trendstop, Kendra Gratteri, the director of merchandising for Beachmint, designer Rachel Pally and Alle Fister, principal with Bollare PR. We talked about technology, e-commerce, social media and blogging and how they affect fashion in the digital age. Apparel News' Executive Editor Alison Nieder wrote a great story covering the event. My Simply Stylist "Meet the Stylist" Feature!!

 

So excited to be featured on Simply Stylist! Recently, I caught up with the lovely Sarah Pollack Boyd, founder of the uber popular stylist website, who asked me to be part of her ongoing "Meet the Stylist" column. I am honored to be featured amongst the "Who's Who" of fashion and celebrity styling - Elizabeth Stewart, David Thomas, Tara Swennen, Samantha McMillen and Cameron Silver - just to name a few. In addition to formerly being the Fashion Editor at Apparel News, I've been lucky to style and write for top publications such as STYLE.com, BritishVogue.com and Surface and style celebs such as James Franco, Brandon Boyd (Incubus) and Coco Rocha (The Face). SS: Tell us the story behind your favorite wardrobe item.

Jayne: I have several, so it’s hard to narrow down, but I love my Prada heels and Aris Geldis necklace. Another favorite item is a vintage fur coat that was a gift from a family friend. I actually traveled to Phoenix, AZ to pick it up. Whenever I wear it, I feel very glamorous, and I’ve had compliments from stylish fashionistas – Janie Bryant and Arianne Phillips included. It was definitely worth the road trip!

SS: What is your favorite era for fashion?

Jayne: I’m a fan of the ‘30s. The clothing of the era is feminine, elegant and very chic – especially the eveningwear. I love a gown cut on the bias! I also enjoy the ’50s and ’60s as women really knew how to dress.

SS: What was your big break?

Jayne: I’ve been lucky to work in all aspects of fashion styling and costuming from tv, film and commercials to fashion editorials and celebrities. But so far, a significant breakthrough was assisting Joselle Yokogawa at Apparel News. When she left the company, I was hired as Fashion Editor – a position I held for ten years. While there, I met nearly everyone in the fashion industry in Los Angeles as well as had the great fortune to travel and cover events and fashion weeks in New York, Sydney, Paris, Tel Aviv and Shanghai. Now that I am freelancing again, I’m hoping the best is yet to come!

SS: Whose closet would you most like to raid?

Jayne: Carine Roitfeld. The former Paris Vogue editrix is incredibly chic and wears couture, yet maintains an edgy aesthetic that is true to her signature style. Also, I’ve seen Anna Dello Russo’s closet featured on Jak & Jil – and I have to say, I would definitely like to raid it. She is fabulous.

SS: Who are your favorite designers?

Jayne: That’s a difficult question as I have many favorites – and it changes as I discover new designers each season. But right now, I love Peter Pilotto and Mary Katrantzou – their prints are exquisite. I’m always inspired by Alexander McQueen, Lanvin, Givenchy and Margiela, and wish I had vintage Halston, YSL and Balenciaga hanging in my closet! I’m also a fan of many LA-based designers including Cerre, Raquel Allegra, Clover Canyon, Skingraft and BCBG Max Azria. I’ve covered the swimwear market for years and Mara Hoffman, Zimmermann and Cia.Marítima are at the top of my list.

Talking Swim Trends in Miami on PLUM TV

 

 

While I was in South Beach covering Miami Swim Week for Apparel News, I was asked to talk trends from the week on Plum TV.  Megan Harris hosted the episode and I chatted about East coast vs. West coast style with The Spin Crowd's Lauren Stoner. It was an honor to be featured in the same episode as Mercedes-Benz Presents Designer Lisa Vogel and Danny Santiago - aka The Fashion Force. Setting the MOOD for Summer

Discovering trends is one thing and setting them is another.

So, it was exciting when I discovered a photo I styled for the "Sun Kissed" shoot for Apparel News' Jan. issue of Waterwear was featured in WGSN's "Day to Night: Swim Trend Analysis." It's the second time WGSN has featured one of my styling shots for directional trend inspiration. For summer, swimwear that can transition from day into night is key. Pictured here is a jeweled Chan Luu top I combined with a ROXY wet suit - or think leggings for a more apropo choice for evening. Featured on WGSN!

Was excited to discover recently that an image I styled was featured on WGSN! The image was part of the "Emerge" photo shoot I styled in collaboration with photographer Ben Cope. We ventured to the Salton Sea's post-apocalyptic shores last Fall to shoot this beautifully edgy story inspired by L.A.'s emerging avant garde designers. The most conceptual aspect of the story included scuba gear and styling to illustrate the designers "emerging" into the world, or rather, from the waters of the Salton Sea. WGSN is one of most reputable trend forecasting companies in the world and it was exciting to see this directional look featured on the site. Scuba-inspired styling is fashion forward not only for swimwear, but in a variety of ready-to-wear shapes as seen below. And with Alexander McQueen's post-apocalyptic "Plato's Atlantis" show making waves for Spring 2010, you can bet there will be more oceanic inspiration well into the future.
